CLIF CYKELSCRAMBLE 2016 Sep 27, 2016 Categories: alleycat, criterium, Cyclocross, MASH, MASH Frames, San Francisco 0 Comment Saturday was the second year Clif threw an event called CykelScramble (pronounced sickle for sure, so there is room to grow there) in San Rafael. They took over the Marin County Fairgrounds and built this crazy race course with wall rides, tables, spines, rock gardens, swinging sand bags, logs, and on down the list. Teams of four signed up to race one bike in a relay. The event brought out a diverse/rad group of Bay Area locals of all ages, all hopped up on bicycles. OG Marin clunkers, BMX shredders, pro XC and even DH racers like Rat Boy. And us for some reason. Some people got weird and that was nice. We did the green screen thing, not for the day’s events, but for what you, the viewer can now do to these photos. Please send to info@mashsf.com and we will make a new post. Dylan, Brandon, Jean, and Matt did not know what they where getting in for when they agreed to get in the van at 7:30 that morning. The course was pretty challenging, so the conditions made for some highs and lows. Stoked to have Matt Reyes out for the day. He could have competed on his FG no question. We chose a 26-inch BMX for the relay race. A full squish XC bike ended up being the winning format. Down, but not out E.T. Someone got knocked out cold, but came around and was okay. Matt spine tap crossing Jake with the spine transfer Matt shot some fake polaroids Rad to see generations out there being stoked on being stoked. The race started with a wheelbarrow stretch. We came in mid-pack. Matt and Brandon had clean bike handoffs. Guy is rad Guy, Cubby, Jake, and Danny raced on 20-inch bmx bikes, and crushed it, and got a little crushed. Sixth in the Roasters for the day. Banked berm Brandon in the rocks The Bruce Lee style Ninja team had some rippers on it. Look them up on the Cykel Scramble site. Jean got blood on the outside Cubby Cubby about to shoot out of the vert wall ride. These dudes won, but we both lost for costume originality. New track drops this fall. See you next year! MM
Brandon + Hunter 2015 Sep 1, 2016 Categories: MASH, San Francisco, Video 0 Comment By running a bike shop, we have a door to our community. Friends visit daily, and we are constantly meeting new faces from around the world. The shop has 2 people that fix bikes, and ship orders. While shooting video, Brandon and Hunter ran the shop together. They became great friends through the shop, music, bikes, photography, travel, and on down the list. Martin and I went to Oakland, and jammed around with Hunter, then met them both at the shop, to do another city loop. We thought this footage was going to go into the friends part, but it ended up being a really fun and sometimes heavy section on it’s own. Enjoy
CHAS + LEGOR + ERIK OTTO Jul 21, 2016 Categories: MASH, MASH Frames, Photo, San Francisco, STORE 0 Comment Ran into Chas on his new Legor road bike this morning. While in route to the bridge, he showed me a spot of native plants where he chose colors for the frames paint work. Was loving how Erik Otto’s warm and cold tones where looking with the summer greens.
ERIK OTTO FOR MASH Jun 12, 2016 Categories: MASH, MASH Frames, Photo, San Francisco, STORE 0 Comment We are excited to share the work of San Francisco artist Erik Otto. We have known Erik through bikes, and love what he is creating as an artist. Working with Castelli, and Specialized, we have created a cycling kit and bottles with Erik, and love the finished pieces. Enclosed are some thoughts from Erik. I grew up as a very active kid and across from my neighborhood park there was an unfinished construction site that became the secret hangout where local kids would find a way through the fence and ride BMX bikes until someone either got hurt or we chased out by security. Once I was old enough to drive a car, I put off on getting a license and wanted to do everything on bike. After graduating college in 2005, I moved to San Francisco to pursue a career in art, but also became exposed to the fixed gear track bike scene from the MASH team for the first time. Heavily influenced by the strength and creativity from those riders I was inspired to ride the city. Everything was so new and I quickly learned how cycling is the best way to get to know your surroundings all the while having fun doing so. And that’s just it. Biking has always been something I turned to for enjoyment. I would work a full day in the studio and scheduled tasks that required me to break up my day to ride across town to pick up or drop something off. Riding bikes and making art initially were very separate, but over time, the lifestyle from experiencing the world on two wheels became a major influence to the more serious work I began creating. I was making work that captured motion and energy and through the process itself I would find a sense of peace amidst forces that I felt were beyond my control. Similarly, the self-sufficient act of riding a bike became empowering and my continual place of refuge, while my interest in flow increased both in and out of the studio. I would make the work then process it later while on a bike and it didn’t take long to see that the two outlets were becoming one. This still holds true today, and while the themes of my work have evolved, the ability to survive with an alternative career path in an expensive city hasn’t become any easier. It takes an insane amount of dedication and perseverance to overcome the moments where nothing seems to be working. I consciously chose this life of struggle and every day I do my best to keep things moving forward. Meanwhile, every single day I hop on a bike which serves as a reminder to power through the pain and endure the most difficult of times because you never know what’s possible unless you keep on going. We created 22oz Purist Bottles with Erik’s print. We love how these turned out. EDDY BACH May 31, 2016 Categories: MASH, San Francisco, Video 0 Comment When the first MASH video came out in 2007, Eddy Bach was 9 years old. He was raised here in San Francisco, and we met through shop rides and alleycats. Like many riders today, he discovered bikes through track bikes on the streets. A track bike can be an affordable way to discover cycling, while it holds the danger card that can attract those who speak it’s language. To us, Eddy represents the future of cycling. Today he races Alleycats, Fixed Crits, XC, CX, and is a freshman at SFSU. Enclosed is an example of how raw and fearless his riding style translates to video. Enjoy.
