BARS

We have a new selection of bars in the shop. Here are a few examples. Thomson has delivered their selection of handlebars. We have the Thomson KFC Carbon CX bars in 42 currently, and will extend sizes in 2013.

Thomson also produces a line of riser bars. These DH bars have been fun on the street, in the dirt, and look clean with their 4 bolt stems.

With holiday shopping behind us, we wanted to spotlight some new items here in the shop. We now offer a complete build for a few bikes, including the Cinelli Super Pista.

Sunday brought a close to the Surf City Cyclocross Series, this time hosted at the Watsonville Fairgrounds. With the abundance of recent rain, the course was muddy and fun. Enclosed are some details from the Elite Men’s A’s and the Single Speed A’s, as they raced simultaneously.

With plenty of rain in December, the Watsonville Fairgrounds course was a blast. We wish our CX season started later, or our weather started earlier.

The Elite A’s, and the Single Speed racers started a minute apart. Chas opened up a large gap in the first lap of the SSCX group, and held it the entire race.

After four hours in the van, a tuff race, and two PB+J sandwiches, Chas went straight to a night shift working on his bike in the rain. We are proud of the CX team this season, and are grateful to all the event organizers, and team sponsors.

Crihs posted up a still from the 2012 NACCC where Chas is looking back for Austin and Lucas, as he goes on to win the 2012 North American Cycling Courier Championships.

Who is getting out tomorrow AM? Meet at the shop by 7:45AM for a cup of coffee, then out the door at 8am. This is a late post, but after 72 weeks of Tuesday AM rides, expect something fun each week. Bring a road or dirt bike, link up with like wheeled friends, and get out there. It will be really nice out!


HISTORIC POLO FIELDS: GOLDEN GATE PARK

With much fanfare, the first bicycle arrived in San Francisco from Paris in 1876. By the late 1890s, bicycles were inexpensive due to replaceable rubber tires and inner tubes, and mass-produced parts, including high-quality chains. Bicycles were popular and fashionable; they became instant symbols of mobility, freedom, and imbued riders with a sense of independence. Large numbers of cyclists flocked to Golden Gate Park to ride leisurely, and eventually, to race competitively. In the early twentieth century, bicycle racing was a premiere spectator sport before motorcycle and automobile racing supplanted it in popularity. A velodrome was built in 1906 in the Golden Gate Park Stadium, also known as the Polo Field, in the western section of the park.

Before and after World War II, bicycle racing in Golden Gate Park represented the best cyclists in the area and was the epicenter for bike racing on the West Coast. Racing bikes from the 1900s to the 1950s had only one gear, no freewheel and no brakes. Acceleration and deceleration depended solely on the strength of the cyclist.

Heading the list of competitors during the 1940s and 1950s were the well-known Gatto Brothers—Gus, Richard, and Vince Gatto from San Jose, California. Gus Gatto raced in national and international tournaments in Argentina and Japan, winning medals in many events. He was the 1949 Northern California Champion, the 1951 National Champion, and a member of the U.S. team in the 1951 Pan-American Games. Bud Thorpe, Lou Rondoni, and Pete Piazza were top, national champion racers in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Trainers, bicycle-store owners, and fans zealously supported cyclists in their efforts to make bicycle-racing history. License to Race presents images from a period of great popularity in bicycle racing in San Francisco, when many local and regional racers tested their abilities, pursued their dreams, and traveled the world.

Tuesday Morning Cross Clinic!

Tuesday morning Dylan will be guiding a cross clinic. Showing the basics of getting loose. We will go over getting through technical sections and staying loose, Hopping everything big to small, and pulling into a corner with confidence. These basic skills will make riding any bike even more RAD! Meet at the shop at 7:30AM, Coffee and chit chat. Out the door at 8AM. LOOSE.
